Catholic Diocese of Youngstown Bishop George V. Murry died Friday morning at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, the diocese said.

Funeral arrangements are pending with the Kinnick Funeral Home.

The diocese had announced earlier this week that Murry had been admitted for inpatient treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The bishop was being treated for leukemia for the third time since 2018, according to the diocese.

Murry had previously announced plans to step down as bishop because of health reasons.

Murry, who was in his early 70s, had led the Youngstown diocese since 2007. He was the first African American and first minority bishop to hold the post.

The diocese comprises 139,000 Catholics in Stark, Portage, Mahoning, Columbiana, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties.
